For parents of kids with ADHD, you may wonder if things will ever get any better. Recent research says that it probably will. A recent study of more than 2, 500 families with children with ADHD followed the symptoms of children from the ages of 7 to 19. Key findings of this study included:
1) Symptoms generally decreased over time.
2) People with low amounts of symptoms usually did not develop more severe symptoms over time. However, people who had high amounts of symptoms usually stayed in the more severely affected group over time.
3) The small subset of children who were severely affected at the outset generally noted a decrease in hyperactivity, but symptoms of inattention and impulsivity remained unaffected over time.
This study reflects what many adult patients notice, that people don't outgrow ADHD, but the symptoms decrease, or even change over time.
