DD has been wearing glasses since the age of 5. Eyeglasses with any child are bound to get a beating, but a 5 year old with hyperactive/impulsive/inattentive ADHD gives them an extra beating with rolling around on the floor, sensory seeking, and super hugging. Not to mention gymnastics lessons.
I can't give any recommendations on brand names because having worn glasses for nearly 35 years, I'm sure they change from year to year. But I will give some pointers on how to acquire glasses for hyperactive children which are durable or at least cheaply replacable.
1. If you have the option to buy cheap insurance, do it. We went through 3 pairs of glasses in the first 3 months. No joke. Neurotypical children break glasses easily through the early elementary years, if not until middle school. Expect the same or more breakage from your active child.
2. Your doctor will probably recommend impact resistant lenses. If not, get them, especially if your child bounces a lot.
3. If your child will not be wearing the glasses all the time, consider a strap so that they are never off his or her person. Walmart carries straps for children.
4. If you don't buy insurance, be sure your child's prescription contains an interpupillary distance. You can buy cheap replacements online, but you have to have this number in the prescription to do it.
5. It costs more to buy a spring hinge, but especially if your child does not remember to remove glasses when dressing or undressing, or if they are rough when taking them off, the spring hinge will save the frame from breaking.
6. If your child cannot get along without his or her glasses (due to a powerful prescription) consider buying a cheap replacement pair..
